“I THAT SPEAK UNTO THEE AM HE”
John 14:1-7 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar…. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
Before John the Baptist was beheaded, Jesus’ purpose and ministry was not yet revealed to Israel. Therefore, Jesus left Judea to avoid confusion with John’s message of the Baptism of repentance to prepare the way of the Lord. However, God had revealed to John that Jesus was “THE MESSIAH” when he baptized Jesus in the river Jordan.
John 1:32-36 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not:… And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;… he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
This beautiful story of Jesus and the Woman at the well is an example of how God reveals to the human heart the Truth that Jesus is “THE MESSIAH OF GOD.” This revelation is presented to every person and then God gives us the opportunity to “ACCEPT” or “REJECT” the revelation.
Revelation 3:20, 21 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Every person’s destination in eternity (Heaven or Hell) depends upon his or her response to the Revelation of God’s Messiah and the Opportunity to Accept or Reject the revelation. If a person Rejects the revelation they will spend eternity in Hell and if the person Accepts the revelation they will spend eternity in Heaven.
Hebrew 9:27, 28 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Through the discussion about the water in the well by the woman and the living water that Jesus spoke of, it was revealed to the woman that He was “THE MESSIAH.” Her response to the comments and questions of Jesus reveal her heart and desire to receive eternal life.
John 4:9-12 Then saith the woman… How is it that thou,… askest drink of me,... Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him.… from whence then hast thou that living water. Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
Jesus spoke to the woman about the one thing, which she personally understood. Everyday she had to come to the well to draw water that she might live physically. But, Jesus told her about Living Water which she had never heard of before and after he got her attention they entered into a discussion. Initially God must get our attention before we will consider the Revelation of the Messiah.
John 4:13-15 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
Jesus’ answer to her question revealed her desire to know more about the Living Water. Then Jesus told her that the Living Water would forever quench her thirst and it would become a well of water within her producing eternal life. The woman replied “GIVE ME THIS WATER” so I will never again have to come to this well to draw water. He response reveals her desire for Eternal Life.
John 4:16-19 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
After her response Jesus immediately brought her to the problem of “PERSONAL SIN” which must be repented of before salvation is available. The woman said she perceived Jesus was a prophet because he knew things about her past life. This was an admission to her conviction of Personal Sin.
John 4:20-22 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me,… Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
The woman’s response to personal sin reveals her religious tradition, which was a perverted form of Jewish Sacrifice. This is similar to people who profess to be Christians but have not repented of their sin or placed their faith in the Blood of Jesus Christ for their salvation. Religion without the One True Sacrifice (the Cross) is perverted Christianity and will never produce Salvation & Eternal Life.
John 4:23-25 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
The woman then admits there is “ONE TRUE MESSIAH” and that she is looking for him.
John 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee AM he.
Literally Jesus said unto the woman, “I AM THE MESSIAH.” This is something all True Jewish believers understood. However, there are few Christians who understand the doctrine of “Messiah.” Most Christians believe Jesus is the Messiah because he fulfilled over 300 Old Testament Prophecies in precise detail in his birth, his life, his death and his resurrection. But, there are three Major Requirements a person had to fulfill in order to be the Messiah that few Christians know about. This is also why many Christians do not understand The Books of Romans, Hebrews and Revelation.
“THE MESSIAH MUST BE A LEGAL BLOOD RELATIVE OF THE PERSON HE WAS REDEEMING”
This is the reason for the Chronology Lists of families from Adam to Jesus birth. These lists are legal documents recorded to prove that Jesus is the legal heir of Adam and literally all mankind. This is an abbreviated list of Jesus legal ancestry (Luke 3:23-38) ADAM, SETH, NOAH, SHEM, ABRAHAM, ISAAC, JACOB, JUDAH, JESSE, DAVID, MARY, JESUS. The Bible authenticates Jesus claim to be the Messiah, because he was born into a family, which had maintained righteousness by their faith in God.
Ruth 3:13,14 …now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I… but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee,…
“THE MESSIAH MUST BE CAPABLE OF PAYING THE FULL PRICE OF REDEMPTION”
The full price was a “PERFECT BLOOD SACRIFICE” to atone for “SIN.” Jesus’ blood was not polluted with the sin of Adam because his father was “God.” Therefore his blood could atone for sin.
Heb 9:12-15 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us... And for this cause he is the mediator of the New Testament, that by means of death,… they which are called might receive eternal life.
“THE MESSIAH MUST BE WILLING TO VOLUNTARILY PAY THE FULL PRICE OF REDEMPTION”
Jesus not only was capable of paying the full price he also was willing to pay the full price. Jesus was the only possibility to be the Messiah and therefore the only one who can purchase our salvation.
Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death,…
